Thurston son of Thomas Thurston and ?Mary Albridge (of
Wrentham probably) 5/16/1760-11/20/1821 m 3/30/1806 Anna
Baker Edwards He came to Otisfield in 1782. Rev: pvt in
Capt. Goodales Co Col. Putnams regt. term 3 years also
pvt in Maj. Allens Co same regt. He first bought of Geo.
Peirce, deed dated 8/23/1785, con. 30 pounds, lot 143,
which he sold to Benj. Green, 10/8/1789 for 60 pounds.
This was later known at the Abram Green place. Grinfill
Holdens record says, "He next exchanged with Daniel Cobb
and got the place where Mark Knight since lived on Bell
Hill. From there he moved to the Nutting place where
Albert Nutting since lived and from there he moved to the
David Jillson place where he lived until the time of his
death." 6/19/1795 he bought of Samuel Dole for 25 pounds
the north half of lot 88. 1/30/1796 bought of Nat.
Edwards for $300 the northeast end of lot 104, and
5/3/1802 bought of Phineas Morse for $300 lot 162. He may
have lived on lot 165, where Jonathan Piper Jr who
married his widow later lived, as that was called the
Thurston farm in some deeds, and his son Israel sold his
portion of it to Jno. Piper. He dropped dead in the
highway opposite the James Wight house. The town records
say "He died very suddenly by falling down in the
street." He is buried in Dunkertown Cemetery. John Piper
son of Jonathan 1771-1/17/1867 m Dorcas Stevens who died
3/30/1822 age 41. He m Anna B. Edwards Thurston
1/30/1823. He came from Waterboro about 1794-5 and worked
for Geo. Peirce a year or two. He became acquainted with
Dorcas Stevens while there and married her. He lived last
in Dunkertown on Piper hill east of the schoolhouse. His
first wife, Dorcas is buried in the upper yard on
Scribner Hill, about the center of the south side, has a
rock headstone with the initials D. P. d. 1822, a. 41,
cut in it. John Piper was a quaint character and many
stories have been told about him and his sayings. He bore
the title of Dr. Piper because of sometimes doctoring
sick animals. He moved the old Jillson house from east of
Cargill Jillsons in the pasture, to the Piper Hill and
lived there. He bought of Israel Thurston Apr. 11, 1831,
20 acres of lot 165, also 1/3 of the house and 1/3 of 3
1/3 acres, which was the estate of Thomas Thurston |
