Margaret Edwards, when attending the "district school" in Otisfield, Me., fell into an altercation with a boy, who knowing her dislike for a certain old lady, tauntingly called her "Old Aunt Dilly." In return he received physical treatment which sent him crying to the teacher, who upon learning his tale of complaint called little Margaret to him. The following dialog took place:

Teacher. Margaret, did you strike John?

Margaret. Yes, Teacher, he called me names.

Teacher. But, you are sorry, aren't you? If you do not say you are sorry, I shall have to punish you.

Margaret. You can whip me until tomorrow; but I'll never say I'm sorry, because it would be a lie. I'm glad I hurt him.

Benjamin Smith York at one time had in his herd of cattle a cross bull. One morning upon entering the yard he found the brute especially ferocious. The bull turning upon him viciously tossed him upon his horns; and attempted to gore him when he fell upon the ground. At this moment his wife, happening to see the act of the enraged beast, seized a pitch fork and ran to his assistance. With all her strength she plied the sharp times of the fork to the bull's tough hide forcing him to submission and thereby saving the life of her husband.
