Comments:

Family located: Gilmanton NH
Occupation: Farmer

The town records of Gilmanton contain the following items:-
1798- "To paid to Jonathan Edwards an abatement for steer 14 cents." Capt. Dudley Prescott

In 1819 the inventory for tax purposes shows opposite the name of Jonathan Edwards the following:- "1 poll, 1 acre mowing land, 4 acres pasture, 200 acres uncleared land, 1 horse, 2 oxen, 3 cows, 1 three year old, no buildings."

A deed dated Sept. 4, 1789, recorded in the public records of Strafford County at Dover, N. H.., shows that Jonathan Edwards purchased from his father, for forty pounds, forty acres of land in Gilmantown "Part of the lot No. ten in the north range of hundred acre lots of said town."

Other Info:

Online:

Marriage records of the Smith Meeting House, Gilmanton NH contain the entry "Jonathan Edwards and Polly Copps April 11, 1793" and also the entry "Jonathan Edwards and Sally Copps both of Gilmanton Aug 3, 1800"

Death records of the Smith Meeting House, Gilmanton NH for year 1800 contain the entry "Edwards wife upper Parish." Could this be the death of Polly? Death records also contain for the year 1801 "a child of Mr. Edwards" which may refer to this family.

Census:

Assuming the Smith Meeting House record of Jonathan's first marriage to be a more reliable date than the one given by the author (and it certainly makes more sense for Polly to have married at 19 rather than 9), Jonathan had neither wife nor children at the time of the first U. S. census. His household then consisted of 3 males over the age of 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females. His mother and her remaining minor children must have been living with him. The family would be:
Jonathan, his brothers David and Timothy - the 3 males over 16
his brothers Samuel and Ebenezer - the 2 males under 16
his mother Jemima and her daughters Martha and Ruth - the 3 females
